Case study · SafeTraces

Three platforms. Zero identity crisis.

SafeTraces builds DNA-tracing hardware for food safety, and had no software to go with it: no field app, no dashboard, no admin tool. Just three very different audiences about to meet three very different products.

I built the design system before I drew a single screen: color, type, spacing, the pieces that had to hold across all three platforms. Every revision after that was an addition, not a redo.

The field tablet got the most attention, since an operator picks it up cold, on-site, with no training. Every hardware state, disconnected, low cartridge, mid-operation, got its own specific screen instead of one generic error message.

3platforms, one shared system

All three shipped, fully integrated with the hardware itself, and the field app replaced a paper process entirely.

“…built our entire software platform from the ground up. They are adept at interfacing software with hardware and are always responsive to our needs.”

— Ulrike Hodges, Chief Operating & Revenue Officer, SafeTraces
