Case study · POC Medical Systems

A cancer screening result anyone can read.

POC Medical's device screens for breast cancer from a single drop of blood. Its first trial was in rural India: patchy connectivity, no assumptions about anyone's comfort with phones, and patients who might be getting a screening result for the first time.

The results screen was the whole problem. Instead of asking a patient to make sense of a score, I designed a risk dial that reads at a glance. The individual biomarker values are still there for the clinician, just not in the way.

The apps shipped in English, Hindi, and Urdu. Urdu reads right to left, so every screen got a mirrored layout, and Hindi's script needed its own type sizing. A separate offline tablet app let technicians run the device and held results until a connection came back. Every way the device could fail, from a dropped Bluetooth link to a bad cartridge, got its own screen telling the operator what to do next.

The patient apps and the technician tablet all shipped for the trial launch. POC went on to raise a $21M Series A to take the test to market, and the rollout ran on these apps.

“They designed and built all of our mobile apps while also developing our cloud platform and possess a firm grasp of HIPAA, FDA, and ISO standards for medical devices.”
