Case study · Capture Collective
No spec, no prior art. Live in under a month.
COVID rules meant corporate venues had to check a government ID, a vaccine card, or a recent negative test at the door, for thousands of people a day, without a line forming. Capture Collective's software provider quoted high fees and a long wait. There was no spec and nothing to copy.

Before drawing a screen, I mapped the whole check-in process and found four different jobs hiding in it: a guest proving they're cleared, a monitor checking them at the door, a site manager running reports, and an admin juggling client organizations. One shared set of data, four views, each built around its role's main task. A guest's home screen is just their QR pass.
Document scanning filled in the forms, but it never decided anything on its own. Every submission showed the original photo next to what the system read, so a person could catch what it missed. With a team of three and a month on the clock, every component got designed once and reused everywhere it was needed.
It went live with enterprise clients in under a month, sooner than the old provider could have customized its own product.
“In less time than it would have taken our existing provider to make the needed customizations to their SaaS product… [they were] able to build us a custom solution from scratch that meets our needs perfectly.”
— Mario Morales, VP Operations, Capture Collective
