Case study · ArifZefen
Skipped the port. Topped the charts.
ArifZefen had a hit iOS app and an Android audience nobody had designed for yet. The easy move was porting the iOS screens over. The device data said otherwise.

Most of the target audience in Ethiopia was on modest Android hardware, not the phones iOS conventions are built for. I made the case for a native Android app instead of a port, then designed it from scratch and helped write the Java and XML myself.
The music player got the most attention of all, since it's where people actually live in a music app: a custom album art carousel and queue, built for phone and tablet separately instead of stretched from one layout.
It became the top app in its category and grew to over a million active users, on a platform nobody on the client's team originally wanted to build for.
“Now we have an Android app that is even better than our iOS app, and day-to-day our user growth on Android is multiples of what it is on iOS.”
